Ethel began playing badminton in 1945 at the age of 21 at the YMCA in Buffalo, NY. After WWII she began training with Bea Massman, making up drills and stroke practicing and taking part in many exhibitions all over the USA and Canada.  Ethel attended Bennett High School which inducted her into its Hall of Fame in September, 2002. After attending one year of business school, she worked for 23 years at Bell Aircraft and 18 years at Borden, Inc., as the office manager.

Ethel continues to be active in badminton by giving lessons to all ages 8-80 in the Buffalo area. Her hobbies include gardening, biking, walking and teaching badminton. She has taught badminton for over 50 years. Ethel's athletic prowess also extended to playing tennis. She won the Buffalo City singles championship 13 years in a row from 1948-1960. She is the holder of nine national badminton titles, having won the national singles championships seven consecutive years from 1947-1953.

She was a member of the elite USA women's 1957 Uber Cup Team, which won the Cup for the United States. That 1957 Championship Uber Cup Team is the only Uber or Thomas Cup Championship the United States has ever won. The prestigious team was composed of Judy Devlin Hashman, Margaret Varner, Lois Alston, Ethel Marshall, Beatrice Massman and Coach Connie Davidson.
